The soap opera as an enduring part of American culture
On any given day 40 million Americans watch one or more “Daytime Dramas,” those serials popularly known as “the soaps.” This large audience represents more than twice the combined populations of Sweden and Switzerland (Newsweek, 1981, p. 64). Why do soaps appeal to so many?
The first really popular soap appeared nearly 50 years ago. It was the radio program “Painted Dreams.” The main character was “kindly old Mother Moran.” The stories revolved around her, her grown children, and their friends. It carried the clear-cut message that marriage, love, and motherhood were women’s highest destiny and fulfillment.
There are currently 13 soaps presented daily. In each you can see, in microcosm, the social stratification system of community life in American society.
The accuracy of any soap portrayals of social structure has been strongly debated, but the fact that millions of people are aware of them, and discuss them as part of everyday life, has not. Prior to 1968, soaps were almost universally condemned by critics and moral leaders. The millions who watched and listened to them denied they felt real involvement, and gave excuses to explain their “bad habit”.
Today soaps are watched and discussed by all segments of society and the subject of a multitude of doctoral dissertations. It has even been suggested that they help people cope with the complexities of life (Newsweek, 1981, p. 64). Why this transformation has occurred has not been fully explained, but here are some of the soaps’ characteristics that seem to be relevant to their new popularity.
- They аre Realistic.
“With their realistic characters, daytime serials provide a more accurate representation of the real world than prime-time shows…, daytime is a world of interior turbulence that hits much closer to home” (Newsweek, 1981, p. 60).
- They Reaffirm Popular Values and Provide Hope.
In the soaps the traditional values are supported, “good” eventually triumphs, and the gains gotten through lies and trickery are always lost. Sacrifice is eventually appreciated, and caring about others brings rewards and respect.
- They Emphasize the Importance of the Daily Life of Each Individual.
By recognizing that life is made up of small decisions that have massive impacts within one’s own individual sphere, the importance of everyday individual life is affirmed.
- They Explain the Unfairness of Life.
Life is presented as unknown and unpredictable; fate can strike at any time and it is life’s real villain (LaGuardia, 1974, p. 174). Fate is not selective. The good do suffer. People do not always get what they deserve. Things do happen for no acceptable reason. If you accept this, and keep trying, if you don’t give up, you can still achieve personal happiness.
