WORDS IN THE MENTAL LEXICON:

A PSYCHOLINGUISTIC STUDY

Alexandra A. Zalevskaya, Professor of Psycholinguistics

SUMMARY

A comprehensive theoretical and empirical study of the mental lexicon is offered by a distinguished psycholinguist whose creative work in this area spans 20 years. The author emphasizes the critical importance of a theory treating the mental lexicon as an integral part of human cognitive abilities, as a dynamic functional system formed through the acquisition of various kinds and forms of knowledge and structured in the needs of thinking and communication. An inherently interactive model of speech production is suggested for discussing some specific characteristics of items in the mental lexicon necessary at different steps of thought shaping. Such items are viewed as the products of a complex interaction of perceptual, cognitive, emotional and verbal experience stared in one's memory and simultaneously utilized at different levels of consciousness when a word provides a direct and/or mediated by inference access to interconnected fragments of the personal world image.

The book takes the reader through a broad program of empirical research giving examples and discussing the issues involved at each step. Much attention is paid to errors and word clusters in free recall under a variety of conditions and to inter-language comparisons of free word association fields analysed by grouping responses according to their relation to the stimulus word. The use of data obtained from native speakers of 11 languages made the author revise some traditional statements about word association relations; it also helped to-trace certain universal strategies of linking items in the mental lexicon and to reveal some peculiarities of using these strategies in different cultural settings.

Readership: psycholinguists, linguists and psychologists working on the problems of word meaning, lexical organization, natural language processing, inter-language and cross-cultural comparisons.
