Мета викладання дисципліни – ознайомити студентів факультету іноземних мов із основними принципами діахронічних досліджень; розкрити властивості мови стосовно її походження та розвитку; встановити та пояснити мовні відмінності на різних рівнях розвитку мови.

Завдання вивчення дисципліни – підвищення рівня підготовки студентів з теорії мови, що сприятиме науковому розумінню теоретичних основ вивчення мови як системи та сучасних методів лінгвістичних досліджень на рівні сучасного статусу науки про мову; навчити студентів робити мовний аналіз у двох аспектах лінгвістичного аналізу: синхронії та діахронії.

Лекції з курсу спрямовані на ознайомлення студентів з предметом історії мови, її завданнями та проблематикою, з деякими ключовими поняттями діахронічних досліджень та їхнім значенням для синхронічного вивчення мови.

Kypcoві та дипломні роботи з історії мови мають на меті контроль знань з цієї дис­ципліни, перевірку вміння студента критично осмислювати наукову літературу, розкрити обра­ну тему, логічно та лінгвістично грамотно викласти свої думки. Вони розглядають актуальні проблеми діахронічних досліджень, які не знайшли достатнього висвітлення у наукових працях.

• Реферати;
  
• Лінгвістичний аналіз історичних різножанрових текстів.
  

Іспит перевіряє набуті знання з дисципліни, вміння визначити основні риси періодів розвитку мови, здійснювати комплексний етимологічний аналіз текстів різних періодів англійської мови, виявляти особливі відношення всередині структури мови.

Компетенції, якими має оволодіти студент у процесі вивчення дисципліни – у результаті вивчення дисципліни фахівець повинен знати: фундаментальні основи діахронічних досліджень, методи досліджень, варіанти й діалекти англійської мови, основні питання історичної морфології та лексикології, системний характер лексики, тісний зв’язок лексики з іншими рівнями мови, проблеми словотвору англійської мови у порівнянні з іншими мовами, етимологію англійської лексики та основи лексикографії.

Підготовлений фахівець повинен вміти: здійснювати комплексний етимологічний аналіз текстів різних періодів англійської мови, правильно оформити наукове дослідження у галузі діахронії, виявляти особливі відношення всередині структури мови.
