There is a popular idea that people will only fight back when their lives become unbearable as a result of falling living standards. But the process by which people resist is much more complex. Lack of power breeds lack of confidence. But in the long post-war boom, rising living standards actually raised levels of confidence. The fact of the boom moved people to expect more from life than previous generations. But of course, bosses and governments shared no such aspirations. But also, it increasingly became evident that in spite of the boom, racism, and other forms of oppression would not be wiped out without a fight. One of the first signs of this recognition was the Civil Rights Movement in the US. This in turn highlighted the need to struggle to others. For instance, it was the US Civil Rights Movement that inspired mostly white, and one black university student, Charles Perkins, to organise a «Freedom Ride» from Sydney University around the outback NSW towns where antiAboriginal racism was rife. This led to increased anti-racist activity. Again, the Womens Liberation Movement arose from the contradictions highlighted by the boom. As women were pulled into the workforce in growing numbers, as contraception became available, and more women entered tertiary education, especially as teachers (pulled in by a shortage of teachers in an expanding education system), the idea that they should be content to be housewives and mothers began to come unstuck. It is not insignificant that it was working class women, many of whom had been influenced by the Communist Party of Australia (CPA), that hit the headlines in 1969 protesting over equal pay. Working alongside men, catching public transport where they paid the same fares, but being paid less, facing the problems of childcare while experiencing discrimination at work drove an at first tiny minority to take a stand.

Всеслав был веpоломно аpестован Изяславом, Святославом и Всеволодом Яpославичами в Оpше, пpиведен в Киев и посажен в поpуб. 15 сентябpя 1068 г. он был освобожден восставшими киевлянами и пpовозглашен киевским князем 24. Полоцкий князь действительно совеpшил стpемительный скачок: из ямы-поpуба (Всеслав сам говоpил, что избавился "от pва сего") 25 он сел на княжеский стол, из жалкого пленника пpевpатился в пpавителя могущественного княжества. Поскольку от Оpши до Киева Всеслава в июле 1067 г. явно должны были везти скованным, можно думать, что в поpубе полоцкий князь сидел в кандалах. Игоpя Ольговича, напpимеp, в 1146 г. пpивезли к поpубу "оковавы и" 26. Во всяком случае, Всеслава "высекали" из поpуба, тогда как иных узников из поpубов "высаживали" или "выимали" 27. Если Всеслав 14 месяцев пpосидел недвижно в оковах, то пpи своем неожиданном освобождении ему действительно надо было на что-то опиpаться пpи ходьбе. Очевидно, в "Слове" отpажена мелкая деталь освобождения полоцкого князя, дpугим дошедшим до нашего вpемени источникам неизвестная. Но этого мало. "Клюка" - в дpевнеpусском языке означает хитpость. Считается, что Всеслав получил свободу с помощью какой-то хитpости. Но хитpости стpоил не он, а стpоили ему. Осмысляя судьбу Всеслава, автоp "Слова" хочет сказать, что основой, опоpой пpевpащения полоцкого князя в князя киевского стали те козни пpотив него, что совеpшили Яpославичи 3 июля 1067 г. Не будь их, Всеслав не смог бы вокняжиться в Киеве.

  Только в этой связи можно понять смысл и значение предпринятой книжной "справы" и унификации богослужебного обряда. Инициаторами их были приезжавшие на Русь греки, которые отмечали разницу в богослужении греческой и русской Церквей. По мнению патриарха Никона исправление книг по греческим образцам возвысило бы Русь и упрочило ее первенствующее положение на Христианском Востоке. Однако его противники увидели в этом измену истинному Православию, поскольку Православие греческое считалось "поврежденным". В этом утверждении была доля истины: после Флорентийской унии греческие книги издавались в Венецианской типографии и правились по западным образцам, некоторые обряды (как, например, троеперстие) были позднего происхождения, и нельзя сказать, что они чем-то лучше и точнее прежних с точки зрения богословского содержания. Хотя экспедицией Арсения Суханова с Афона были привезены многочисленные греческие книги, реально исправление текстов проводилось по новопечатным греческим, а также украинским и белорусским книгам, уже приведенным в соответствие с западными. Справщиками были малороссийские монахи, репутация которых далеко не всегда была безупречна и для которых не много значили древние традиции московского благочестия. Все это вызывало резкое неприятие круга "ревнителей древнего благочестия", к которому первоначально принадлежал и сам Никон.

  Если до недавнего времени историки искусства рассматривали Возрождение как качественно своеобразный тип культуры, противопоставляя его, с одной стороны, средневековой готике, а с другой - семнадцативековому барокко, то А.Ф. Лосев, автор этих строк и ряд других культурологов пришли к выводу, что Возрождение является переходным типом культуры - переходным от феодального ее качества к буржуазному, что объясняет основные его особенности и кладет конец многим мало продуктивным дискуссиям. Однако дальнейшие размышления показали, что этот переход не завершился кризисом Возрождения, но в новых формах продолжался и в ХVII, и даже в ХVIII веках. Действительная победа капитализма была отмечена политически Великой французской революцией, а духовно - самоутверждением Романтизма и Позитивизма, родство и соперничество которых определило всю историю европейской культуры ХIХ столетия и было унаследовано ХХ веком. Таким образом, особенности культуры ХVII века могут быть поняты, если рассматривать его в этом трехступенчатом процессе, в котором она является его средним звеном, осуществляя «переход в переходе» - переход от ренессансной гармоничной уравновешенности противоположных потенциалов культуры: аристократического и демократического, мифологического и светского, чувственного и духовного, эмпирического и рационального, этического и эстетического, традиционалистского и новаторского, классицистического и реалистического и т.д., через их конфронтацию и противоборство в ХVII веке к завоеванию безусловного превосходства одним из этих потенциалов, многообразие проявлений которого в разных областях культуры соответствовало содержанию понятия Просвещение. Поэтому основной эстетической «краской» XVII века стал драматизм, что резко отличило его от лиро-эпического Возрождения и привлекло внимание деятелей культуры ХIХ - ХХ веков (начиная с романтиков) к позднему Шекспиру, Сервантесу, Рембрандту, Рубенсу, Бернини, Калло, к драматическому по своей природе барокко в целом, а в философском наследии этого столетия - к Гоббсу и Паскалю.
