761. Faith No More

В 1992-м вышла очередная студийная работа коллектива, "Angel Dust". В записи этого диска почти что не принимал участие Джим Мартин, которому надоел стиль, который исповедовала группа. Гитарные партии за него пришлось исполнять Гоулду. Осенью 1993-го Мартин официально расстался с группой. Ему на замену пришел Коллега Паттона по "Mr. Bungle" Трей Спруэнс. Этот товарищ продержался недолго, он лишь принял участие в записи "King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime", а в последовавшее за этим турне вместо него отправился Дин Мента, бывший гитарный техник группы. Пластинка была встречена довольно прохладно (лишь в Астралии альбом каким-то образом оказался на первом месте). На родине ее практически проигнорировали, а европейские гастроли пришлось свернуть из-за недостатка интереса. Участники "Faith no more" правда заявили, что это дает им прекрасную возможность вернуться в студию и приступить к работе над следующим альбом и что они вполне довольны сложившимися обстоятельствами.

Да в планы Вайнерхолла это, в общем-то, и не входило, так как втроем на сцене справляться было бы тяжеловато. Поэтому с концертами решено было повременить, и после недолгого перерыва "Falconer" вновь принялись за репетиции. Когда материал из 10 треков был подготовлен, команда вновь оказалась в "Los Angered studio" и за 24 дня окончила работу над вторым альбомом. "Chapters from a vale forlorn" в феврале 2002-го появился в Японии, в марте в Европе и в мае в Америке. Торопливость японцев объяснялась в этом случае тем, что первый альбом "Falconer" им довелось лицезреть лишь в импортном варианте. И надо сказать меломаны из страны Восходящего солнца не прогадали, поскольку им первым удалось услышать "Chapters", ничем не уступающий своему предшественнику, а местами и превосходящий его.

Влияние Брикс стало сказываться уже на "The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall", первом альбоме, вышедшем на "Beggars Banquet". Тогда же музыканты познакомились с хореографом Майклом Кларком и написали музыку и либретто для его балета "I Am Kurious Oranj". Начиная с 1986 года синглы "The fall" начали попадать в чарты, а такие песни как "Hit the North" и "Victoria" даже вошли в британский Топ 40. Этому коммерческому успеху группа была обязана мелодичным аранжировкам Брикс. Однако, в 1989-м Смиты развелись, и на место гитариста вернулся Мартин Брама. Несмотря на всю эту чехарду, группа поддерживала высокий стандарт своих студийных работ и имела успех в британских чартах с синглами "No Mules Fool" (№29, 1969), "Strange Band" (№11, 1970), "In My Own Time" (№4, 1971) и "Burlesque" (№13, 1972). В конце 1973-го вышел четвертый, наиболее тяжелый по звучанию альбом "Mother's Pride", тоже записанный в Лондоне, однако, на этот раз в "Olympic Studios" и с новым продюсером, Тоддом Рандгреном. Весной 1974-го в группе произошел первый конфликт, в результате чего ее покинула Джун Миллингтон. На ее месте оказалась Патти Куатро (p. октябрь 1948, Детройт; гитара, бас), сестра легендарной Сюзи Куатро. Месяц спустя за Джун последовала и Элис, которую сменила Брай Ховард. In spite of his associations with such progressive artists, Fantin-Latour was a traditionalist, and his portraits particularly are in a precise, detailed style.

После выхода диска, проданного тиражом более 10000 экземпляров, у музыкантов началась напряженная гастрольная жизнь. Other members of the group included two painters from Chatou, Fr., Andrй Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck, who, together with Matisse, formed the nucleus of the Fauves. Derain's Fauve paintings translate every tone of a landscape into pure colour, applied with short, forceful brushstrokes. The agitated swirls of intense colour in Vlaminck's works are indebted to the expressive power of van Gogh. Three young painters from Le Havre were also attracted to Fauvism by the strong personality of Matisse. Othon Friesz found the emotional connotations of the bright Fauve colours a relief from the mediocre Impressionism he practiced; his companion Raoul Dufy developed a rather carefree ornamental version of the bold style that suited his own personal aesthetic nature; and Georges Braque created a definite sense of rhythm and structure out of small spots of colour, foreshadowing his development of Cubism. Albert Marquet, Matisse's fellow student at the Йcole des Beaux-Arts in the 1890s, also participated in Fauvism, as did the Dutchman Kees van Dongen, who applied the style to depictions of the fashionable society of Paris. Other painters associated with the Fauves were Georges Rouault, Henri Manguin, Charles Camoin, and Jean Puy.

Fauvism was a short-lived movement, lasting only as long as its originator, Henri Matisse (1869-1954), fought to find the artistic freedom he needed. Matisse had to make color serve his art, rather as Gauguin needed to paint the sand pink to express an emotion. The Fauvists believed absolutely in color as an emotional force. With Matisse and his friends, Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958) and Andrй Derain (1880-1954), color lost its descriptive qualities and became luminous, creating light rather than imitating it. They astonished workers at the 1905 Salon d'Automne: the art critic Louis Vauxcelles saw their bold paintings surrounding a conventional sculpture of a young boy, and remarked that it was like a Donatello ``parmi les fauves'' (among the wild beasts). The painterly freedom of the Fauves and their expressive use of color gave splendid proof of their intelligent study of van Gogh's art. But their art seemed brasher than anything seen before.

Dostoevski had published two novels and several sketches and short stories when he was arrested along with a group of about 20 others with whom he had been studying French socialist theories. After the 1848 revolutions in Western Europe, Russia's Czar Nicholas I decided to round up all of that country's revolutionaries, and in April 1849 Dostoevski's group was imprisoned. Dostoevski and several others were sentenced to be shot, but at the last minute their sentence was changed to four years of hard labor in a prison in Omsk, Siberia. There, Dostoevski said, they were "packed in like herrings in a barrel" with murderers and other criminals. He read and reread the New Testament, the only book he had, and built a mystical creed, identifying Christ with the common people of Russia. He had great sympathy for the criminals.

The fight for California began almost 500 years ago with Queen Elizabeth I. She sent Sir Francis Drake to harass and raid the Spanish galleons. England was beginning to realize the value of California. England did not want Spain claiming more land in the new world, upsetting the balance of power between the super powers of the time. Tensions were already high between Spain and England. Henry VIII, Elizabeth's father, had divorced his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, a Spanish princess. In order to accomplish the divorce, England severed ties with Catholicism and Henry had instituted protestantism as the State religion. Henry and Jane Seymore's son had assumed the throne after Henry's death and continued Henry's policies. But when Edward the IV died at the age of 16, Mary I came to the throne. She was the daughter of Henry and his first wife, Catherine. Her ties to both Spain and Catholicism were strong. Elizabeth was suspected of plotting to overthrow Mary and was imprisoned in the Tower. After "bloody Mary" died and Elizabeth I became monarch, the power struggle between catholics and protestants did not end. Eventually, Elizabeth had Mary, Queen of Scots, executed for treason. Mary was her greatest threat to the throne since Mary claimed it as her right by way of England's ties with the French throne. Even though Mary had abdicated her rights, she still remained a threat to Elizabeth since Spain and France could use Mary as a cause to move against England. With the death of Mary Queen of Scots, England had secured protestantism and Elizabeth's reign, but was short on allies. In order to build new European allies, England had to remain a power to be reckoned with. Spanish settlement along the west coast of North America could bolster Spanish power. This was the last thing England wanted.
