301. Bazarov: a lunatic or visionary?

The young Kirsanov, barely twenty-three years of age, apparently had not yet formed a sound system of morals and values and was drawn into discipleship of nihilism primarily by the power of Bazarovs charisma and the “freshness” of the nihilists ideas, rather than their sensibility. Arkady is a person lacking character and devoid of an independent intellectual backbone. He constantly needs someones support and Bazarov just happens to be vivid enough a personality to attract such a simple life form as Arkady. Over the course of their friendship, Arkady breathes every word spoken by his sensei, seldom displaying signs of independent thought. He delightfully rejects authority, but his nihilistic fervor is not sincere; Arkady semi-consciously follows his friend, who softly and ambiguously ridicules him as a phony, for Bazarov knows that Arkadys subscription to nihilism is very strongly contradicted by his demeanor, and his frequent displays of feelings and emotions. But why does Bazarov not renounce this friendship? Why does he tolerate the company of Arkady, this dim hypocrite, and why does he agree to travel to Maryino? Well, there was no reason not to. As devoted to work and science as Bazarov was, he saw no harm in spending a little time in the mellow and pleasant country estate of his young friends parent. Moreover, Bazarov yet again pursues a selfish motive by agreeing to travel to Maryino: he dreads boredom, which would probably consume him at his true destination, his own parents homestead.

В самый разгар битломании "Beach Boys" умудрились организовать альтернативный вариант и с композицией "I Get Around" не только возглавили штатовские чарты, но и проникли в британские хит-парады. Понаделав кучу шлягеров ("Fun, Fun, Fun", "Help Me Ronda", "California Girls" и т. д.) и с триумфом объездив полмира с гастролями, Брайан неожиданно сник, и концерты "Beach Boys" внезапно прекратились. Дело было в том, что Уилсонглавный, вполне заслуженно снискавший к тому времени славу одного из самых выдающихся мелодистов современности, в увлекательной конкурентной борьбе с " Beatles" споткнулся о загадочный альбом ливерпульской четверки под названием "Rubber Soul", представлявший музыку уже совершенно иного уровня. Брайан подобрал брошенную "битлами" перчатку и заперся в студии. Он в одиночку, без помощи братьев и прочих родственников, стал готовить ответ. Новое произведение "Beach Boys" называлось "Pet Sounds". Янки по привычке принялись было его раскупать, но привычным серфпопом от пластинки даже и не пахло. То, что семейка Уилсонов произвела на этот раз, верных поклонников группы озадачило и повергло в недоумение. В результате в США альбом провалился, однако по другую сторону океана имел большой успех.

Можно прямо сказать, что в данной ситуации "Битлз" приняли единственно верное решение: они практически отказались от крупных концертных мероприятий и посвятили свое дальнейшее творчество замкнутой студийной работе. Изменились и взгляды музыкантов на мир: они как бы сняли с себя розовые очки и увидели те язвы современного земного общества, которые до сих пор были для них заретушированы их молодостью и головокружительным успехом. Некоторые из "Beatles" обратились к нетрадиционным восточным религиям (Леннон и особенно Харрисон пожертвовали огромную часть своих доходов на строительство храма Кришны в Англии). Студийная работа принесла свои плоды, которые в отношении великих "Beatles" не кажутся случайными нисколько, В 1967 году был записан монументально-новаторский альбом "Клуб одиноких сердец сержанта Пеппера", который дал прямой толчок к появлению в рок-музыке таких жанров как apт-poк, хард-рок и психоделия. В этот наиболее плодотворный в качественном отношении период отравился сверхдозой лекарства страдавший депрессией Брайен Эпштейн (версия самоубийства во время приступа имела место, но стопроцентного доказательства нет). 20 февраля 1969 года записана песня Маккартни и Леннона "Yesterday". Довольно безграмотная с точки зрения грамматики, но проникающая в сердца, понятная всем, она покорила публику и вознеслась к вершинам хит-парадов. До сих пор она является одной из визитных карточек группы. В то же время возникли первые разногласия между битлами. Beatles безуспешно пытаются записать альбом "Get Back". Ничего не получается. Каждого из них больше интересуют собственные проекты: Леннон вместе со своей женой Йоко Оно снимает фильм, Маккартни и Харрисон занимаются продюсированием новых исполнителей, а Ринго Старр снимается в кино. Этот период в жизни группы можно обоснованно назвать периодом распада.

Фирма выделила музыкантам в качестве продюсера Сина Бивэна и отправила их в студию. Осенью 2001 года дебютный альбом, озаглавленный просто "Beautiful creatures", уже был готов и поступил в продажу. Пластинка напоминала творения " Guns N'Roses" периода их расцвета, только с более современным звучанием. Диск содержал двенадцать треков, а японское издание было дополнено двумя бонусами композицией "Get up" и акустической версией "1 A.M.". Песня "1 A.M." также попала в саундтрек к фильму "Valentine". Несмотря на то что материал альбома был довольно-таки качественным лейбл был не удовлетворен продажами пластинки и в начале 2002 года разорвал контракт с группой.

Уникальный композитор и гитарист-экспериментатор Билл Нельсон получил широкую известность благодаря своему неортодоксальному подходу к рок-музыке. Главной его заслугой является то, что ему удалось перекинуть мостик от масштабного, хитроумного прогрессива первой половины 70-х к открытому для экспериментов, энергичному року начала 80-х. Билл Нельсон научился играть на гитаре в раннем детстве. В середине 60-х он присоединился к лучшей местной группе "Teenagers". В 1970-м Билл вместе с единомышленниками собрал близкую к госпел группу, с который он выступал до середины 1971 года, после чего занялся самостоятельной карьерой. Записанная с помощью Ричарда Брауна (фисгармония, фортепьяно, ударные), басистов Гарета Эйллиджа и Леона Артурса пластинка "Northern Dream", принесла Биллу Нельсону репутацию самобытного исполнителя. Положение спас Эрик Клэптон, предложивший "Bee Gees" записаться в студии, где он только что закончил свою работу. В результате на свет появился альбом "Mr. Natural", имевший ритм-энд-блюзовое звучание и получивший хорошие отклики в прессе. С диска "Main course" началась новая эра "Bee Gees". Исчезло влияние романтичных баллад Маккартни, а вместо этого в их музыке появились танцевальных ритмы и некая прифанкованность. В этот период вышел первый концертник группы, "Bee Gees live", совмещавший их старые и новые хиты. В 1977 году братья переключились на диско, выпустив саундтрек к фильму "Saturday Night Fever". Альбом имел крупный успех, равно как и последующий диск "Spirits have flown". Однако эра диско пошла на спад и в середине 80-ых про "Bee Gees" было мало слышно. In his early pictures, Bellini worked with tempera, combining a severe and rigid style with a depth of religious feeling and gentle humanity. From the beginning he was a painter of natural light. In his earliest pictures the sky is often reflected behind human figures in streaks of water that make horizontal lines in narrow strips of landscape. The Agony in the Garden was the first of a series of Venetian landscape scenes that continued to develop for the next century. Four triptychs (a triptych is a set of three panels used as an altarpiece) in the Venice Accademia and two Pietas, both in Milan, are all from this early period. Bellini's St. Vincent Ferrer altarpiece, which is still in the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, was painted in the mid-1470s.

В августе 1991-го у группы была готова вторая пластинка, "The grand leveler", а перед ее выходом команда с успехом провела европейское турне в роли хедлайнеров. К концу того же года стало ясно, что Пол Адамс мало интересуется делами коллектива, и его попросили уйти. Unter den Ausländern stellen die türkischen Staatsangehörigen mit etwa 1,7 Millionen die größte Gruppe, an zweiter Stelle stehen die Italiener (530000). Bei der Integration der Migranten in den vergangenen beiden Jahrzehnten sind Fortschritte erzielt worden: Der Erwerb der deutschen Staatsangehörigkeit wurde gesetzlich erleichtert, die Kontakte zwischen Migranten und Deutschen sind intensiver, die Akzeptanz der ethno-kulturellen Vielfalt hat zugenommen. Und mit dem neuen Zuwanderungsgesetz gibt es erstmals eine umfassende gesetzliche Regelung, die alle Bereiche der Migrationspolitik berücksichtigt. Doch bleibt Integration eine Herausforderung an Politik und Gesellschaft. Die Bundesregierung sieht in der Integration der in Deutschland lebenden Ausländer einen Schwerpunkt ihrer Arbeit. Dabei stehen Sprachförderung, Bildung und die Integration in den Arbeitsmarkt im Vordergrund. Im Juli 2006 hatte Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel zu einem ersten Integrationsgipfel mit Vertretern aller für Integration relevanten gesellschaftlichen Gruppen eingeladen. Das Ergebnis der „Nationale Integrationsplan“ wurde Mitte 2007 vorgestellt. Er enthält klare Ziele sowie über 400 konkrete Maßnahmen der staatlichen und nichtstaatlichen Akteure: So soll ein Netzwerk von Bildungspaten Kinder und Jugendliche aus Zuwandererfamilien in Schule und Ausbildung unterstützen, und die Wirtschaftsverbände sagten zu, jungen Migrantinnen und Migranten bessere Chancen bei der Ausbildung zu gewähren. Die Umsetzung des Plans soll regelmäßig überprüft werden.

The BBC first broadcast the chimes on the 31st December 1923 - there is a microphone in the turret connected to Broadcasting House.

313. Biopolitics in Russia: History and Prospects for the Future

The role of biopolitics as an important component part of the post-communist "overarching cognitive map" is further enhanced by the fact that it can be used not only in social technologies and in a quasi-ideological role. Evolutionary biology has recently developed important ramifications applicable to a variety of social problems and issues. Among them, the following problems & issues seem to be of paramount importance for Russia:
- Environmental Protection. This dimension of biopolitics has been long one of the foci of the activities of various action groups, both formal and informal. Under Gorbachev, many of such groups, starting their activities as "environmentalists", gradually switched over to more political agendas. It is pertinent that in the Baltic countries, which still formed part of the Soviet Union in the late 80s, national liberating movements often employed ecological and "green" slogans. Generally speaking, struggle against environmental destruction provides a very attractive ideological basis for the development of network-like groups including the type discussed above (in this case, such a network group is biopolitical in terms of both its structure and specific goals). Despite all the activities of environmentalists, however, environmental deterioration still remains a burning question in contemporary Russia. This is in part due to the economic chaos and a low standard of living (for a majority of people), so that protecting the bio-environment (as termed by A. Vlavianos-Arvanitis) is sometimes considered a luxury, in work of the more vital concerns. Importantly, biopolitics provides a broader conceptual basis for environmental protection than, e. g. the "green" or purely "environmental" movements. Since it includes the behavioral and neurophysiological dimensions, it encourages scholars and scientists to consider the relationships between environmental factors and human behavior and the performance of the nervous system. In this vein of research, R. Masters has recently investigated the correlations between heavy metal (Pb, Mn) pollution, alcoholism, and violent criminality in the US. A similar study would be even more interesting in Russia, which is notable for its heterogeneity in terms of both pollution (there are great differences between polluted and ecologically clean regions, or, for that matter, even between "dirty" and "clean" districts of Moscow) and criminality rates. A. Vlavianos-Arvanitis (e. g., 1985, 1991) considers the whole package of problems in more philosophic (almost mystical) terms. She describes the totality of all living organisms on Earth as a single body of bios, and she compares destroying the Amazon rainforests to damaging the "lungs" of this planetary quasi-organism.
- Education. The above discussion on environmental protection provides per se a sufficiently important reason for introducing a biological curriculum into the educational system for non-biologists and thereby attempting to eradicate bio-illiteracy (Gusev 1991; 1994; Vlavianos-Arvanitis 1985; 1991). An additional reason is that biological (and specifically biopolitical) knowledge seems to be mandatory for lawyers, political decision-makers, public activists, medical doctors, and reprentatives of a large number of other professions in their everyday activities. The international Commission for Biological Education (CBE) currently pays considerable attention to Russia, which is in part due to the fact that CBE includes an active Russian member;
- Legislation. The development and enforcement of a reliable legal framework, with respect to environmental concerns and other issues of bio-policy (e. g., abortion, euthanasia, organ transplantation, patenting genetically engineered organisms, etc.) still represents a seroius challenge for Russia, despite the considerable recent progress in this field. Bearing in mind the relationship between the environmental and behavioral issues of biopolitics, special attention should be given to the following questions: "What species-specific behaviors are most relevant to environmental law?... What are the implications of these behaviors for laws dealing with environmental preservation?" (Gruter, 1991, p.123);
- Technology. Using living cells and their components for the purpose of producing drugs, food additives, etc. has become an important industrial strategy in Russia. An active role in these developments has been played by the Biotechnology Center of MSU, which for a long time was headed by Prof. V. D. Samuilov. Another active catalyst of these biotechnological developments was Prof. Manakov from the Fine Chemical Technology Institute (Moscow, Russian Academy of Sciences). The Biotechnology Center published, in the late 80s, a series of 8 guide-books covering genetic and cell engineering, enzyme technology, cell cultivation in vitro, protein production, and other dimensions of modern biotechnology. Inportantly, biotechnological and environmental problems often overlap. On the one hand, biotechnological developments can help protect the environment. For example, industrially cultivating and then using under field conditions the natural enemies of weeds and harmful insects (e. g., the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis can be used to fight insect pests) is an ecologically clean alternative to employing pesticides. On the other hand, biotechnology can itself produce ecologically dangerous substances. For instance, large-scale industrial production of bacterial protein in the Russian town of Kirishy resulted in releasing huge amounts of this protein (as an aerosol) into the atmosphere. This kind of air pollution caused an upsurge of "green" protesters' activityalmost to the point of an organized rebellion.
- Energy. With the help of unicellular organisms, one can produce renewable fuel (ethanol, bio-gas, hydrogen) as an environment-friendly and economical alternative to oil, gas, coal, or uranium. Curiously enough, some of these bio-fuels can be produced only by mixed cultures of microorganisms. For example, no single microorganism species can convert industrial or municipal waste to methane-containing biogas; this requires a concerted action of at least 3-4 microbial species, each carrying out one of the many reaction steps. The cooperation-based microbial association required for this task is characterized by complex biosocial interactions and can itself be described in quasi-biopolitical terms (Oleskin, 1993).
- Urban Planing, a part of bio-architecture (Eibl-Eibesfeldt und Hass, 1985; Vlavianos-Arvanitis and Oleskin, 1992). This is a research direction aiming to use biological patterns (e. g., a honey comb, a spider's web, a bio-membrane structure) in architecture. It also emphasizes the idea that an architect should pay sufficient attention to ethologically based human behavioral trends. In a primate group or in primitive human society, there was virtually no distinction between social and family life, public and private activities. Bearing in mind these evolutionary considerations, the idea of a creative mix was put forward in bio-architecture. This idea envisages mixing, within a small area, educational facilities, industrial enterprises (on condition that they are prevented from polluting the environment), recreational facilities, as well as apartment houses. Moreover, architectural innovations may promote the people's feeling of self-identification with a specific local community (e. g., by installing sports facilities and constructing leisure game club rooms on the roofs of houses), bring the people closer to nature (by cultivating ivy plants climbing up the house walls), and provide necessary premises for partial economic self-sustainability of such a community. This can be achieved, for instance, by cultivating vegetables on house roofs and balconies. The color palette used in the interior of a house is also of considerable importance. Since our evolutionary ancestors spent most of their time in forests or on savannas, the green color still carries a special, subconsciously perceived message, comforting and reassuring us, and also stimulating the operation of the eye and the visual cortex. Bio-architecture is one of the foci of the activities of the Creative Lab Future of Russia under the Moscow City Council.
- State Politics. The process of social self-structuring, discussed above in the example of the network group model, can be facilitated by establishing a horizontal network structure (e. g., a hirama or an association of hiramas) inside the state machine itself. There are different strategies for attaining this goal. Either the state can be persuaded to set up a new hirama-type structure dealing with an overarching socio-political doctrine, or one of the pre-existing network structures can pressurize the state, by winning popular support, into incorporating it into its apparatus. This network group could then make good use of all state-supported facilities, such as mass media and publishing houses, in order to propagandize its doctrine. Importantly, in contrast to the Soviet-epoch "ideological commissions" of the Communist Party, this network group inside the state must not be able to coerce or oppress the people. This organization must not persecute dissidents, who should feel free to express and defend their works (unless they come into conflict with laws). It should try to convince the people of its works by organizing public discussions and debates.

To help draw a clear picture of the potential effects of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels on coral reef building and maintenance, Langdon raised the carbon dioxide level of the atmosphere in the ocean biome of the Biosphere 2 Center. By taking water chemistry measurements, he could detect a correlating drop in the saturation state of aragonite in the water. He found this drop had a significant effect on decreasing the amount of calcium carbonate in the water, thereby also decreasing the growth rate of the coral reef.

После неудачного четвертого альбома команду покинули сразу двое музыкантов Колт и Форд. Басиста заменили Свеном Пайпеном, а гитару вручили Одли Фриду. В 1998-м "Black crowes" переиздали первые четыре альбома в виде лимитированного бокс-сета, добавив туда несколько дополнительных треков и концертный мини-альбом. Успех вернулся к команде на следующий год, когда вышла новая студийная работа, "By Your Side", ничем не уступавшая "Shake Your Money Maker". Спустя некоторое время творчеством группы заинтересовался легендарный "цеппелин" Джимми Пейдж, предложивший "Crowes" отыграть с ним серию концертов. Один из наиболее интересных хардкор-коллективов появился на свет благодаря стараниям гитариста Грега Джинна. Этому парню надоело засилье групп типа " Eagles", " Steely Dan" и " ELO", и он решил, что настало время для нового саунда. Впечатленный простотой и непосредственностью первого альбома " Ramones", Джинн собрал небольшую команду людей, еле умевших обращаться с инструментами, чтобы приступить к музыкальной деконструкции. С самого начала своего существования "Black flag" попали в оппозицию ведь Калифорния все-таки не очень подходящее место для хардкора. Вообще было удивительно, как группа продержалась первые четыре года.

Последующей зимой Закк и Фил готовили материал для второго лонгплея, "Stronger than death". Во время этого тура у Ондича раздуло щеку, и он, будучи не в состоянии играть из-за невыносимой боли вынужден был подмениться Крэйгом Нуненмачером. Когда Фил все-таки поправился, у него произошла стычка с Закком, и ударник хлопнул дверью. Таким образом Нуненмачер стал постоянным членом "Black label society". После выхода концертника "Alcohol fueled brewtality" команду покинул Стив Гибб, а его место занял бывший басист Оззи Осборна и " Alice in chains" Майк Инез. Правда он продержался недолго, поскольку был связан контрактом с другой группой. "Black label society" на концертах выручил другой "подельник" Оззи, Роб Траджилло.

Популярность команды еще сильнее подскочила, когда ее пригласили на телевидение заполнять паузы в хоккейных матчах национальной лиги. Благодаря этому с творчеством коллектива смогли познакомиться более 70 миллионов телезрителей Северной Америки и других континентов. Кроме этого группа интенсивно выступала в Европе и Америке, деля концертные площадки с " Pantera", " Rammstein", " Death", "Sevendust" и другими знаменитостями и собирая порой до 100000 зрителей. Несмотря на успех, флуктуации в "Black symphony" продолжались. Когда Мартин ушел в " UFO" Плестер сильно обновил состав команды, пригласив на роль фронтмена Рика Пламондона (экс-"Menace", "Skitzotic"), на клавишные - Маттиаса Берстрома, а за ударные посадив Пита Холмса из "Black N'Blue".

В 1966 году семеро молодых музыкантов из Лейкестера (Англия) Кэй Гарретт (вокал), Кип Тревор (вокал, гитара, гармоника), Джесс "Зут" Тэйлор (клавишные), Джим Ганнон (гитара, вокал), Клайв Джонс (саксофон, флейта), Боб Бонд (бас) и Клайв Бокс (ударные) основали соул-группу "Pesky Gee". Коллектив просуществовал три года, выпустив за это время всего лишь один альбом, "Exclamation Mark". В 1970-м команда (уже без Гарретт) поменяла вывеску на "Black widow", заодно кардинально поменяв свои музыкальные ориентиры. Группа стала исполнять оккультный хард-рок в духе " Black Sabbath". Концерты же были поставлены по всем законом мистических шоу, апофеозом которых была инсценировка жертвоприношения молодой голой женщины. Одного этого факта оказалось достаточно, чтобы о "Black widow" заговорили в прессе.
