ХОД УРОКА
1. Организационный момент
I know that you often go to the cinema or theatre. What words are usually heard before any showing? (“Will you turn off your mobile phones, please”)
Now tell me the topic of our lesson. (“Mobile phones. Mobilemania”)
Then what will be the objectives of our lesson? (To find out advantages and disadvantages of using the mobiles; to practice using topical vocabulary)
You know that more than 400 million people around the world own a mobile phone. In Finland, almost all teenagers own a mobile phone. This map shows the percentage of the population that owns a mobile phone in some countries.
Now take the sheets of paper. During the lesson you will make the list of advantages and disadvantages of mobiles.
2. Речевая зарядка
Послать SMS ученику: “Y is your phone on? :-0 Turn it off & hv a gr8 time @ the lesson 2day :-)” S1, have you received a text message? Read it for yourself, please. Пока ученик читает, обратить внимание всех остальных на запись такого же «сообщения» на доске.
S2, come up to the blackboard, recode this message and read it aloud.
Y=why
:-0=shocked
&=and
Hv=have
Gr8=great
@=at
2day=today
:-)=smiling
Now turn off your phones, please.
And why do you think people use symbols in SMS? (A text message can only have about 160 symbols (letters or numbers). Also typing a message on a phone keypad can take a long lime. So text messages are usually short. Users have some short ways to write words.)
Take Card 1 and match text messages with their meanings.
CARD 1
Ex. 1 Match these text messages with their meanings.
a) At John’s. See you later
b) Are you OK?
c) No. Where are you?
d) OK. See you today?
e) Yes and you?
f) No. Tomorrow. Where?
g) At work and you?
h) Love Bob.
i) At home. See you later?
j) Laughed out loud.
k) Free to talk?
l) Yes. When?
m) At 7 o’clock. That’s all for now. See you.
n) Tata for now (bye for now).
o) In my opinion.
p) By the way.
q) OK. Bye for now.
Now look at the blackboard, check up your work and count your score.
3. Активизация лексических единиц по теме.
Let’s revise the vocabulary, connecting with our topic. Work in chain: S1 will say a word; S2 will say its definition etc.
Delivery report – an SMS which informs you that your text message has been delivered.
Caller ID – a feature that displays the number of a person who is calling on your phone.

Now let’s play a “Bingo” game. Take Card 2; circle any three words in it. S1 will be an animator. He will give the definitions of the words, you’ll cross out the corresponding word. The student who is the first to cross out his/her words is the winner.
CARD 2
Circle three words and play the “Bingo” game.
Delivery report | Caller ID | Smiley |
Silent alert | Ringing tone | Incoming call |
Call register | Dead spot | Voice mail |
Take Card 3. Work one by one.
CARD 3
Read what a person says about using mobile phones and fill in the gaps with the words you’ve learnt in the lessons.
I don’t use a mobile phone much. I don’t like s---- c----. I only use it when I have a good reason like an e--------. I know that I should always use it to put my parents at
e---, but I keep forgetting this. Also I hate using my mobile phone in public places. Because I am c-------- that other people can overhear me. Of course, it can be useful when you are, for example, r------ l---, but still I believe using mobile phones in public places is not a--------.
Fill in the gaps with the words in the box.
About that at about off to |
I can overhear _______least one cell phone conversation most days, including some that give me more personal information that I want to know________a person. Usually people are concerned__________it. They try to get________the phone as fast as they can. Still, there are always a few who seem not to worry______others have to listen ________ their conversation.
4. Практика в аудировании
Take Card 4. You will listen to some opinions about mobile phones, decide whose opinion it is and say why you think so and what each speaker thinks about using mobiles.
CARD 4
Listen to the opinions about mobile phones and match them with the people below.
- Mary Craig, 75, a pensioner
- Patrick Kelly, 20, a university student
- Rachel, 13, a pupil
- Donald Carbour, 48, a professor of communication
Decide which person:
- is worried about other people’s feelings when using his/her mobile phone
- believes mobile phones are not necessary at school
- doesn’t think people should use their mobile phones while talking to other people
- is completely positive about using mobile phones
- feels bad about hearing other people
- thinks he/she sees too many mobile phones around
- uses his/her mobile phone for important calls
- believes that using mobile phones can cause illness
The must-have thing for everyone is a mobile phone, but I think that only older people should have them. Children are just wasting money and time on them, and could damage their health. A lot of teenagers are used to taking their mobile phones to school now, but I don’t see the real need to, because schools will phone home if there are any problems.
I don’t worry that people are listening. If you are in a public place, you are fair game. They’re just social calls and I don’t talk that long, just make plans with friends, and find out what everyone is doing. Before people had mobiles, back in the 1970s, how did they make plans for Saturday night? Mobile phones are the perfect way to organize last-minute parties. Word spreads fast from phone to phone. Send a text, wait an hour and everyone will be at your house, even the cops.
They are everywhere in the campus, going from class to class all students have mobiles stuck to their ears. I hear kids say all kinds of things on their phones, things I don’t want to hear about…silly, unnecessary chats. You get mobiles in class too. There’s rarely a lecture when sb’s phone doesn’t go off! I just can’t get use to it! I find it so annoying because mobile calls become more important than face-to-face conversations. When a mobile rings, conversations get put on hold. That doesn’t seem right!
I use my mobile to call my husband to tell him I’m OK. Mostly I use it when I want to put sb’s mind at ease, if I’m running late or in an emergency. Even then, I’m still not sure when or where it’s acceptable to make a mobile-phone call. I’m concerned about talking on my phone and disturbing people near me. I think I’m quiet enough, but still wonder if it is OK.
5. Работа с текстом
Now take Card 5 and 6; read the text and do the tasks.
CARD 5
Have phone will travel
‘I just couldn’t live without my mobile phone,’ says Emma. ‘I need to have it to know what’s happening.’
‘ Yes,’ her friend agrees. ‘You can easily get left out if you don’t have your phone with you’
Emma is a nineteen-year-old nurse who loves to do as much as possible in her social life. She bought her mobile phone so she could always be in contact with her friends. ‘I’d hate to miss a really good dance party.’
Tony is also nineteen. He’s a college student, and his phone was a present from his mother. She bought it because she wanted to be able to stay in touch with him. Some teenagers wouldn’t like this. Tony doesn’t mind because his friends can stay in touch too.
Both Emma and Tony try not to spend too much time on the phone because it costs too much money. But people don’t just use their mobile phones for talking. Today many people use their mobile phones to send text messages. This has become so popular that schools in some countries have banned mobile phones. They want to keep students from sending messages to each other in class.
In Japan, many people also use mobile phones to connect to the Internet. This allows them to do all sorts of things. They can buy concert tickets, check their bank balance or get a weather report. They also look up train timetables, send e-mails, or even get their horoscope. And, if they have some time to spare, they can always download a game or two.

7. Практика в письменной речи
You’ll write a “Thoughtful exposition”. I’ll read a short text and you are to make all necessary changes to express your own point of view.
I can’t live without my mobile phone. I never turn it off at school, because I don’t want to miss an important call or message. I think students should be allowed to use mobile phones at school any time.
Now read out your texts to the group.
8. Работа в группах
Now you’ll work in groups. Group 1 will discuss the advantages of mobile phones you have written during the lesson; group 2 is to decide what the disadvantages are. You can add your own opinions. I give you 3 minutes and then you’ll exchange your opinions and find which group has numbered more points.
