    The fauna or animal life of Britain is much like that of north-western Europe, to which it was once joined. Many larger mammals such as bear, wolf have been hunted to extinction, others are now protected by law. There are many foxes. Otters are common along rivers and streams, and seals live along much of the coast. Hedgehogs, hares, rabbits, rats and mice are numerous. Deer live in some of the forests in the Highlands of Scotland and England.

Ever since he taught Bartolomй Murillo, Velasquez has directly or indirectly led painters to make original contributions to the development of art. Others who have been noticeably influenced by him are Francisco de Goya, Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet, Edouard Manet, and James McNeill Whistler. His famous paintings include The Surrender of Breda, an equestrian portrait of Philip IV, The Spinners, The Maids of Honor, Pope Innocent X, Christ at Las Meninas (Maids of Honor)

    A keen sensitivity to the effects of light and color and an interest in defining precise spatial relationships probably encouraged Vermeer to experiment with the camera obscura, an optical device that could project the image of sunlit objects placed before it with extraordinary realism. Although he may have sought to depict the camera's effects in his work of Delft (c.1660; Mauritshuis, The Hague), it is unlikely that Vermeer would have traced such an image, as some commentators have charged. Moralizing references occur in several of Vermeer's works, although they tend to be obscured by the paintings' vibrant realism and their general lack of narrative elements. In his Love Letter (c.1670; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam), a late painting in which the spatial environment becomes more complex and the figures appear more doll-like than in his earlier works, he includes on the back wall a painting of a boat at sea. Because this image was based on a contemporary emblem warning of the perils of love, it was clearly intended to add significance to the figures in the room.

    Nevertheless, his status and achievement are clear. He was one of the greatest of all decorative artists, delighting in painting enormous pageant-like scenes that bear witness to the material splendor of Venice in its Golden Age. Marble columns and costumes of velvet and satin abound in his work, and he used a sumptuous but delicate palette in which pale blue, orange, silvery white, and lemon yellow predominate. He painted many religious scenes as well as mythological and allegorical works (and portraits), but his penchant was for feast scenes from the Bible rather than incidents from Christ's Passion. His love of richness and ornament got him into trouble with the Inquisition in a famous incident when he was taken to task for crowding a painting of the Last Supper with such irrelevant and irreverent figures as 'a buffoon with a parrot on his wrist... a servant whose nose was bleeding... dwarfs and similar vulgarities'.

    Virginia Stephen married writer Leonard Woolf in 1912, referring to him during their engagement as a "penniless Jew." The couple shared a close bond, and in 1937 Woolf wrote in her diary "Love-making after 25 years cant be attained by my unattractive countenance ... you see it is enormous pleasure being wanted, a pleasure that I have never felt." They also collaborated professionally, in 1917 founding the Hogarth Press, which subsequently published most of Woolf's work.[2] The ethos of Bloomsbury discouraged sexual exclusivity, and in 1922, Woolf met Vita Sackville-West. After a tentative start, they began a relationship that lasted through most of the 1920s.[3] In 1928, Woolf presented Sackville-West with Orlando, a fantastical biography in which the eponymous hero's life spans three centuries and both genders. It has been called by Nigel Nicolson, Vita Sackville-West's son, "the longest and most charming love letter in literature."[4] After their affair ended, the two women remained friends until Woolf's death.

    If I want to go to the theatre, first of all, I have to buy a ticket. If it is an interesting and popular performance it is difficult to buy a ticket at once. That's why I have to buy a ticket beforehand. Now I have a ticket. I go to the theatre, leave my coat in the cloak-room. Then I go to the foyer. It is interesting to see the photos of the famous and popular actors and actresses on the walls. I want to know who plays in this performance and I buy a programme. The performance begins at 7 o'clock in the evening after the third bell. My seat is near the stage. I like the performance and I applaud the actors and actresses. The performance has got two parts. During the interval I usually go to the cafe to have a cake and drink a cup of tea or a cup of coffee, or a glass of lemonade. I like to discuss the play if I see it with my friends.

    1. Консольне застосування - ODBC_Excel програма ODBC, що може бути відкомпільована як в самому середовищі Visual C++, так і з командного рядка компілятором cl.exe. Дане застосування ілюструє можливості використання функції SQLDriverConnect, яка надає можливість підключення до джерела даних, навіть якщо той не був раніше інстальований за допомогою програми початкової установки ODBC. Джерелом даних для цього прикладу є таблиця Student, створена в Microsoft Excel. Також ілюструються можливості інших функцій, повязаних з створенням SQL-запитів. Програма відображає виконання двох запитів
    2. Проект - MFSDB застосування, що використовує технологію ODBC, створене майстером AppWizard. Використання ODBC в цьому випадку спрощується за допомогою Microsoft Foundation Classes Library (MFS). Джерелом даних, що було інстальовано за допомогою початкової установки ODBC, є база даних Students, створена в Microsoft Access. Розглянуті можливості створення запитів безпосередньо в середовищі Visual C++, а саме використовуючи функцію GetDefaultSQL класу, породженого від CRecordset. Створена форма, яка відображає результати запиту. В застосуванні також створені додаткові класи, породжені від CRecordset, що дають змогу писати додаткові запити або використовувати інші таблиці з даної бази даних. Створено декілька форм, класи яких породжені від CRecordwork. Одні з них відображають результати роботи запитів, написаних за допомогою вищезазначеної функції, інші використовують запит, створений в Microsoft Access. Розглянуті можливості використання Component Galery (до проекту додано компоненту Tips of the Day Поради дня).
    3. Проект - DAODB - застосування, що використовує технологію DAO, створене майстером AppWizard. Джерелом даних є база даних Employees, створена в Microft Access.     The first live concert with Spivakov I attended in Moscow Conservatory in 1994 (I hope I can get this correct from my memory), where Maestro along with Vladimir Kniazev soloed in Brahms double concerto with Russian National Orchestra, under Mikhail Pletnev. All the pictures on this page were taken by my husband, Boris Baryshnikov (more fun pictures you can find here), after "Moscow Virtuosi"'s concert in Wheaton College, Wheaton, Il in April 2000. This concert gathered together quite a number of Russian-speaking people. All of us were delighted to see the same warmth of Spivakov's brilliant music interpretation, as well as unassuming generosity to the listeners. We were lucky to get his autograph which I am proudly presenting (to be added) here and take a part in the press-conference after the concert.

In Llanberis, a small town at the foot of Snowdon, eighty-six per cent people speak Welsh as their first language. At the local primary school children have nearly all their lessons in Welsh. The children should be bilingual by the time that they are eleven years old. It is not a problem for children to learn two languages at the same time. Children have insight into two cultures, so have all the folk tales of two languages. Children like Welsh because in Welsh you spell things just how you say them, in English there are more silent letters.

    If Poe writes about ghosts, the discovery of a cats portrait on a wall of the burned house is a very important episode. It is important for two reasons. First, this is, in my opinion, the only scene that cannot be explained logically. Where did the picture come from? The main character supposes that when the fire started, somebody “must have […] cut [a dead animal] from the tree and [threw it], through an open window, into [main characters] chamber” to wake him up (300). Would it not be much easier and faster to throw a stone or a branch of a tree through the window to wake the main character up? This explanation does not sound serious. Also, the hero believes that “the falling of […] walls had compressed the [cat] into the […] freshly-spread plaster; the lime of which, had then with the flames, and the ammonia from the carcass, accomplished the portraiture as [the main character] saw it “ (301). Could this chain of events really happen? It is more than unlikely.

    Ich glaube, es gibt in diesem Mrchen fast nichts mrchenhaftes. Alle Taten und Sachen, die auf den ersten Blick mrchenhaft scheinen, sind schlielich ganz realistisch. Diese zwei Schwindler sind keine Zauber, sie verstanden keinen Stoff zu weben, der eine solche Eigenschaft haben konnte, da die Leute, die dumm sind oder zu ihren Amt nicht taugen, diesen Stoff nicht sehen konnten. Das war ihre Erfindung. Und der Kaiser und seine Hofleute sind selbst schuld daran, da sie ihnen glaubten. Wenn sie wirklich so klug wren, wie sie dachten, dann knnten sie die Plne der Schwindler rechtzeitig entlarven. Man mu zuerst denken und nur dann etwas machen. Und die Leute, die fr das Schiksal des Staates verantwortlich sind, mssen noch grndlicher denken, weil das Leben des Volks von ihnen abhngt.

In this room Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation of 1863.

Many visitors come to Washington DC to see the White House. It is the greatest attraction for many of them. So all the joy in life that came to Wassilissa came to her through the tiny doll that she always carried in her pocket.

    One cause of the “Titanic” disaster is said to have been an unlucky Egyptian mummy case. This is the lid of an inner coffin with the representation of the head and upper body of an unknown lady of about 1000 bc. Ill-fortune certainly seemed to travel with the lid first of all the man who bought it from the finder had an arm shattered by an accidental gun shot. He sold, but the purchaser was soon afterwards the recipient of the bad news, learning that he was bankrupt and that he had a fatal disease. The new owner, an English lady, placed the coffin lid in her drawing room: next morning she found everything there smashed. She moved it upstairs and the same thing happened, so she also sold it. When this purchaser had the lid photographed, a leering, diabolical face was seen in the print. And when it was eventually presented to the British Museum, members of staff began to contract mysterious ailments one even died. It was sold yet again to an American, who arranged to take it home with him on the “Titanic”. After the catastrophe he managed to bribe the sailors to allow him to take it into a lifeboat, and it did reach America. Later he sold it to a Canadian, who in 1941 decided to ship it back to England; the vessel taking it, “Empress of Ireland” , sank in the river St Lawrence. So runs the story, but in reality the coffin lid did not leave the British Museum after being presented in 1889.

    One of the few things we can be sure about, in this famous but enigmatic work, is the fact that Gilles is a Pierrot. Watteau may have painted it as a sign for the cafй run by the former actor, Belloni, who made his name as a Pierrot. The model, a friend or another actor, is unknown. Standing with his arms dangling at his sides, with a dreamy, naive look on his face, the moonstruck Pierrot stands out monumentally and idiosyncratically against a leafy Italianate background. At the foot of the mound, reminiscent of a fairground stage, four half-hidden figures--the Doctor on his donkey, Lйandre, Isabelle and the Capitaine--contribute to the singularity of the composition and the poetic drama.
