Предметом курса является литературная история Соединенных Штатов Америки в её наиболее ярких проявлениях, речь пойдет о наиболее существенных моментах литературной жизни США 18 -19 и частично 20 веков.

Существует ли связь между литературой и национальной историей, особенностями национального характера? Есть ли свои законы у процесса формирования и развития литературы? Может ли страна с уникальной историей создать уникальную культуру, или же существуют некие универсальные “правила”, общие для культуры всего цивилизованного мира? Можно ли вообще говорить о “законах” и “правилах” применительно к такой области свободы самовыражения человеческого духа, как художественная литература?

Мы поговорим о жизни и творчестве таких выдающихся личностей, как Бенджамен Франклин, Вашингтон Ирвинг, Натаниэл Готорн, Эдгар Аллан По, Марк Твен, Джек Лондон, Фрэнсис Скотт Фитцджеральд, Эрнест Хемингуэй; и о том, каким образом в произведениях этих писателей отразились как авторская индивидуальность, так и дух нации и времени; рассмотрим такие понятия, как литературное направление, творческий метод и стиль художественного произведения; попробуем применить эти знания на практике при анализе конкретных художественных текстов.

Кур включает в себя как лекционные, так и практические (семинарские) занятия и читается на английском языке.

Язык вообще и язык художественного произведения в частности - не просто инструмент общения, передачи идей. Сама структура языка соотносима с принципами человеческого мышления и структурой человеческого мира. Произведение литературы  это, с одной стороны, некое порождение авторского “я”, идея о мире, воплощенная в образы и оформленная сюжетом. С другой стороны, всякое произведение человеческой мысли и духа  это отклик на требование времени. Литература (и шире - культура) не есть “вещь в себе”, она встроена в процесс человеческой деятельности по преобразованию реальности. Разные исторические и культурные ситуации требуют от литературы выполнения тех или иных задач, и язык предоставляет автору художественного произведения возможность использовать разные “инструменты” эстетической интерпретации (толкования) и воспроизведения реальности. Таким образом становится возможным говорить о стиле художественного произведения как о некой “пограничной” категории, результате “материализации” творческого метода. Под стилем мы здесь понимаем общий тон и колорит художественного произведения  зримое и ощутимое единство всех главных моментов художественной формы как воплощение принципа мироотношения художника. Все это в завершительной фазе творческого процесса как бы выступает “на поверхности” произведения и доступно анализу.

На практических занятиях мы будем читать и переводить оригинальные тексты на английском языке: новеллы, рассказы и стихотворения  и анализировать текст с точки зрения его стилистической специфики, делать выводы относительно принадлежности рассматриваемого произведения к той или иной тенденции развития культуры и литературы; литературному направлению или школе; рассмотрим проблему индивидуального авторского стиля и авторской концепции реальности.

Зачет по спецкурсу возможен в форме докладов (самостоятельный анализ текста).

Annotation

Terms 1,2

The course Stylistic Aspects of American Literature is devoted to the 17th-18th-century American literature of the colonial period and the 19th-century literature of the United States of America. The program includes both theoretical and practical classes and is lectured in English. The course is designed to make the students acquainted with the main outlines of American literature and culture. The students will see the inner logics of American cultural development; the links between literature and national history, the patterns of national character. The questions how literature appears and develops; how the work of literature reflects both the author’s individual ideas and the national spirit during a certain historical period are also the points of interest. We will deal with such problems as literary DIRECTION, creative METHOD, STYLE of literature, and will try to put this knowledge into practice while analyzing certain texts of American literature.

During the seminars we will read, translate, and analyze authentic texts in English. The task of the students is both to identify the text as an illustration of a certain historical period and to offer the individual variant of its interpretation.
