THE GAME : “NEW YEAR’S HOLIDAYS ARE THE BEST”


Задачи урока: 1.Совершенствовать лексические навыки по теме «Новогодние праздники в Великобритании и России»;

2. Развивать умение учащихся работать в группах;

3. Развивать интерес учащихся к иноязычной культуре.

Оборудование к уроку: Песня “We wish you a Merry Christmas”, пазлы с этой песней; карточки с названиями праздников “New Year’s Day”, ‘Christmas Day”; для физминутки карточки со словами по теме “New Year’s holidays”( New Year, Christmas, cards, flowers, winter, First Foot, celebration, party, traditions, fireworks, candles, gifts, …etc.), ребусы, жетоны.


Ход урока:
  1. Организационный момент.
  • Good morning, boys and girls! How are you today?
  • Good morning, teacher! We are fine! And you?
  • I’m fine, thank you. I’m very glad you’re fine today, so let’s start our lesson.
  1. Сообщение темы и целей урока.
  • Today we will have a special lesson. We will play the game. Please, divide into two groups and choose the captains.
  • Now, when you have two groups, let’ listen to me and be ready to work. There are many holidays in our country and in English - speaking countries. But the holidays we like most of all are new Year’s Day and Christmas Day. People prepare to these holidays beforehand: they send greeting cards, buy presents, make fancy dresses and decorate their houses. And when the holiday comes they congratulate each other by reciting the poems and singing a song. Today we should discuss the topic “New Year’s holidays are the best”. We’ll speak a lot about “New Year’s Day” and “Christmas” by doing a lot of interesting and exciting tasks.

1. making puzzles

- To sing a very popular song in English-speaking countries you should make some puzzles. Let’s make these puzzles and be ready to sing a song. That team which will do this task quickly and correct is the winner in this tour. That group of pupils will get a score.

wherever – где бы ни

На доске записаны слова, которые следует отработать перед аудированием:

to begin – начинать, начинаться

widely – широко

religious – религиозный

candles – свечи

to honour – почитать

The 2d task is to define which holiday shall I describe you. Each team has cards of “New Year’s Day” and “Christmas Day”. You’ll lift them according to the stories. There are some stories which don’t belong to any of these holidays. For each right answer each team will get a score. Listen to me, discuss some seconds with all partners of your team and be ready to answer. Be attentive.
  1. The celebration of this holiday begins on December 31st. (New year’s Day)
  2. British people celebrate this holiday on December 25th. (Christmas Day)
  3. In Britain this holiday is not widely celebrated. People ignore it and go to bed at usual time. (New Year’s Day)
  4. On this day many people have gatherings eating dyed eggs, pashas and kulich. (Easter)
  5. This is a religious holiday when people have parties, light candles and give each other gifts. (Christmas Day)
  6. On this Day people have parades and ceremonies to honour those who died in the Great Patriotic War. (Victory Day).
  7. We celebrate this holiday on the 7th of January. (Christmas Day)
  8. This is a day when people honour women by given them flowers and presents. (Women’s Day)
  9. This is a night when people have parties and stay up until midnight to see the new year in. (New Year’s Day)



  1. Физминутка.

(the 3d tour)

- There are some cards of “New Year’s Day” and “Christmas Day” around the classroom. Your task is to find as many words as possible. That team who finds more cards and translates them without any mistakes will be the winner in this tour.


6. Составление рассказа об одном из новогодних праздников.

(the 4th tour)

- This tour is connected to speaking. You’ll have some time to be prepared speaking about one of these holidays. I advice the first team to make a short story about “Christmas Day”. The second one will speak about “New Year’s Day”. You have only 5 – 7 minutes to do this task. Those pupils who will make a holiday story in a good and right way are the winners in this tour.

(Учителю следует обратить внимание учащихся на доску, где записаны выражения, которые могут помочь им при составлении рассказа. Примерные выражения:

British people celebrate …

My favourite holiday is …

On New Year’s Day (Christmas Day) people … и т.д.)


7. Ответы на вопросы.

(the 5th tour is a tour for captains)

- The captains of each team should come to the board. This task is for you.

I’ll suggest you some questions about New Year’s Day and Christmas Day, you should answer them correctly.

(Учителю также необходимо обратить внимание капитанов команд и остальных участников игры на доску, где записаны выражения, которые могут им помочь ответить на вопросы правильно. Например:

First foot must carry …

British people present their gifts … и т.д.).

All partners of the team should listen to the captain’s answer attentively, because they can help to answer it. If the team doesn’t have any answer, the second group has opportunity to give the right answer and vice versa. For each right answer you’ll get a score.

(the 6th tour)

- Guess three puzzles. For each right answer you’ll get a score. You’ll have 5 minutes.


9. Итог урока. Домашнее задание.

- Let’s count your scores. The winners are those who have more ones. Clap our hands them.

- Did you like this lesson? What did you like most of all?

- Write down your homework. You should learn all words of New Year’s holidays. You’ll have got a word dictation.
