Доклады симпозиума, а также материалы их обсуждения, представлены известными российскими и зарубежными философами – участниками IV Российского философского конгресса. Они посвящены пяти основным темам: «Философия гуманитарных наук», «Знание и социальная трансформация», «Конструктивизм и дискурс», «Парадигмы и развитие науки», «Знание, вера и рациональность». В докладах показывается важность культурно-исторического подхода к знанию, обращается внимание на новые тенденции в методологии гуманитарных и социальных наук, на междисциплинарные процессы в эпистемологии и философии науки.
The proceedings of the international sympoisum “Knowledge and Society” represent papers and discussions by the Russian, American, German, Britisch and Australian philosophers – participants in the IV Russian Philosophical Congress (Moscow, May, 24-28). The papers are devoted to the main 5 topics: “Philosophy of Human Sciences”, “Knowledge and Social Transformation”, “Constructivism and Discourse”, “Paradigms and Scientific Change”, “Knowledge, Belief and Rationality”. In the papers, the validity of the cultural/historical approach to knowledge is demonstrated, special attention is payed to the new tendencies in the methodology of social and human sciences, and the interdisciplinary processes in epistemology and philosophy of science are analyzed.

Ladies and gentlemen, dear colleagues and friends,
It is my pleasure and privilege to welcome all of you in Moscow and in particular the speakers and discussants in our international symposium “Knowledge and Society” within the framework of the 4th Russian Philosophical Congress.
I would like also to express my deep gratitude for the huge piece of work that was done by the speakers during the preparation for the symposium, composing the written versions of papers and comments.
It was a hard task for the organizers to separate the papers into several sessions. We propose therefore one or two more limited topics for discussion every day. The volume to be published as a result of our work will be structured in the same way; it will include papers and comments as well as some critical remarks made during the sessions, if they are submitted in written form to us up to the end of June. And from the very beginning I would like to suggest the chairing persons to make general conclusions after every morning and afternoon session, summarizing the main ideas or the main outcome of the discussion. It is also worth writing them down as soon as these concluding remarks will be published in the same volume.
It is worth pointing out that we quite intentionally proposed English as a working language of our meeting. It was done to make the discussion easier for the foreign participants and to give our Russian participants a chance to improve their English as it concerns first of all their communicative ability. So we have so to speak sacrificed ourselves in order to make the discussion more vivid and intensive, and we expect in our turn, that the native and more experienced speakers will encourage us in mastering fluent speech, mastering real philosophical English.
As for the whole procedure and the time limit to be severely controlled by the chair it will run as follows: 30 minutes for a paper, 15 minutes for the first comments, 5 minutes for the further remarks, all together 1 hour for every paper including discussion.
Let me say just a couple of words in order to dwell upon the conceptual framework of your symposium. It can be summarized in four lines:
Epistemology and philosophy of science should analyze knowledge as a particular human, that is a social and cultural, endeavor;
This statement concerns the conditions of knowledge production and the very content of knowledge as well;
Results and methods of the social and human sciences are integrated into modern philosophical discourse and build a significant interdisciplinary context of philosophical speculations;
Taking into account the anthropological, linguistic and cognitive turns in epistemology we should analyze the whole variety of knowledge including its scientific and non-scientific forms in their historical settings and in the context of Lebenswelt – the world of life.
To what extent these statements can be shared by the participants, we shall see during our meeting, which becomes therefore a kind of social experiment.
According to the application list our symposium is going to be one of the most popular among the others at the Congress – over 45 participants have been registered. So we shall divide in two teams working correspondingly in English and in Russian in two rooms. Though the speakers and principle discussants have been already selected, all other participants are still welcome to take active part in the discussion.
So let me wish you lively discussion and nice stay in Moscow!
