The collapse of the Soviet Union: 20 years on

Тематика конференции: The conference «The collapse of the Soviet Union: 20 years on» brings together scholars working across various disciplines in Central and East European studies. We are particularly keen to receive proposals for complete panels but we are also happy to receive paper proposals that can be combined for discussion in any of the following panels:
  1. Culture/literature/media;
  2. Politics/international relations/political economy;
  3. History;
  4. Sociology/social anthropology/geography/social policy.

The organising committee will agree the first draft programme(s) by the end of November. Participants will be asked to submit their papers/powerpoints by the end of February 2011 for circulation to other members of their panel. (Re)Visions of History in Language and Fiction

Тематика конференции:

The conference will be devoted to issues of retelling, rewriting, and representation of the past in fiction and political discourse, and their translations and adaptations; to the discussion of how history becomes a text, and how texts create history. Within the category of 'fiction', we invite the discussion of traditional literary genres and film, as well as less commonly researched text types: comic books, graphic novels, computer games and role-playing games, blogs and websites.


We welcome submissions in the following research areas:

personal and collective history, memory and identity in language and fiction

ideological visions of history, postcolonial perspectives and revisions

censorship, propaganda, power relations and re-evaluation of the past in literary fiction and discourse

translation and adaptation as re-writing and re-assessment of history

interactive history, historical games and reenactment

history, alternative history and future history in speculative fiction

perception, stylistic and textual markers of historic authenticity

discourses and rhetoric of historic and political change

discursive production and reproduction of ideologies

intertextuality and mediation of historical events

Registration and abstract submission guidelines:

REGISTRATION FORMS with short abstracts (250 words) should be sent to revisions@umk.pl no later than 15 September 2010 (extended deadline).

Individual papers should take 25 minutes, followed by discussion. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 22 September 2010.

Тематика конференции: This colloquium aims to discuss your PhD or MA thesis with the well-recognized scholars in the field of political marketing and communication, discuss with other colleagues and get feedback. It can either cover a specific methodological problem you are facing or briefly introduce the whole concept of your research project. The topic of your project must relate to the discipline of political marketing or political communication. The colloquium is a part of an international conference “How to communicate politics”, which includes academic panels as well as workshops with professionals in the field of political marketing and communication.

Тематика конференции: This conference aims at reflecting on the development of democracy and ethnicity in the Western Balkans over the last decade, exploring patterns of inclusion and exclusion of the ethnic other, the legal protection of minorities and the implementation of minority rights, external dimension of democratisation (Europeanisation) and its effect on the situation of national minorities. The conference will begin with a keynote speech given by one prominent international scholar. The conference will focus on three themes, with one panel devoted to each during the conference: Panel 1: Forms and Challenges of Minority Inclusion/Exclusion in Plural Societies (chaired by Josef Marko); Panel 2: Exclusion/Inclusion of the other during Europeanization (chaired by Florian Bieber); Panel 3: Case studies: Political Representation and Socioeconomic Situation of National Minorities in the Western Balkans (chaired by Anna Krasteva - tbc).
