^ Christmas Message

By H.W. Longfellow

I heard the bells on Christmas Day

Their old familiar carols play,

And wild and sweet

The words repeat

Of peace on earth, good will to men.

Я слышал колокольчик Рождества,

Его привычно старые мотивы

И вольные, и нежные слова,

Слова, что в памяти народной живы,

О мире на земле и счастье для людей.

(Перевод М. Кауфман)

^ CHRISTMAS CANDLE

By B. Moore

Glimmer and glow,
Sending your light
Through the soft-falling snow.
Shine, Christmas candle,
Riinding the earth
of a long-ago stars
and a long-ago birth.
Shine in riibrance
of the night that He came,
writing a faith
Warm and bright as your flame.

^ WHEN DOES SANTA COME?
By J.P. Johnson

He comes in the night!
He comes in the night!
He softly and silently comes,
on pillows of white,
Are dreaming of bugles and drums.
He goes through the snow
like the ship through the foam,
while little white snowflakes swirl.

The Song “Christmas Tree“

Oh, Christmas tree! Oh, Christmas tree!

How ever green your branches!

Oh, Christmas tree! Oh, Christmas tree!

How ever green your branches!

You never change the whole year round

You brighten up the snowy ground.

Oh, Christmas tree! Oh, Christmas tree!

How ever green your branches!

Oh, Christmas tree! Oh, Christmas tree!

How ever green your branches!

The poem “Christmas Day, Happy Day”

Now let’s sing the song “Christmas is coming”.

Pupil 1: The most popular holiday in Great Britain and America is Christmas. It is celebrated on the 25th of December as the time of the birth of Jesus Christ. But its tradition goes back to the earliest of times. In those days the sun meant so much to primitive man that when it began to go lower each day till December 23, people thought the sun was going to die out and they were worried. They ate less keeping the food for the next year. On December 23 the sun stayed in the sky longer and after that the nights were becoming shorter and shorter. When this happened, the primitive man was very happy. He even felt he wanted to celebrate it. Later it became a tradition to celebrate it at the end of December with presents and plenty of eating.

^ The poem “What Child is this?”

Pupil 2: Christmas is Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ.

The Christmas story comes from the Bible. It tells us an interesting story of shepherds who were watching their sheep when an angel appeared to them. He told them that a Saviour had been born in Bethlehem. The shepherds went there to see Jesus.

The song “Oh, Christmas Tree”

Pupil 4: A Christmas tree stands in everybody’s living-room at Christmas. In the earliest of times green trees were symbols of life. Candles at Christmas also go back to those times. People believed that their light helped them to forget the darkness of winter.

Pupil 5:
Most families buy gifts for relatives and friends, write Christmas cards. In England almost every family receives more than 60 Christmas cards. The first Christmas card was made in 1842 by an English painter who sent that card to one hundred of his friends. Now millions of Christmas cards are sent and received.
