Long-term cooperation in the supply of Kazakh uranium for nuclear reactors will help in solving India’s power demand, said Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev here Saturday.”Long-term cooperation (in supply of uranium) will lead to the solving of India’s problem of power,” he said in his address at a business meet jointly organised by industry chambers.
Nazarbayev is in India on a four-day state visit. As part of the trip, India and Kazakhstan signed five agreements, including for cooperation in nuclear energy, hydrocarbons and space research.
The two countries also Saturday signed an agreement for cooperation between state-run Nuclear Power Corp and uranium production company KazAtomProm.
Kazakhstan is among the world’s top suppliers of uranium after Australia and Canada.
Nazarbayev said the visit to India as chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations marks improved bilateral ties.
“We reached new level of interaction. It should give new beginning to mutual relationship,” said Nazarbayev.
He also released the Hindi edition of his book, “Kazakhstan’s Way”.
Earlier during the event, industry lobby Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and its Kazakh counterpart, Atameken Union, signed an agreement for creating a joint economic council.
“We hope to extend the political ties into greater economic cooperation, which at present stands at minuscule figures of $180 million,” said Atameken Union chairman Azat Peruashev.

The scope of the agreement involves export of uranium from Kazakhstan, the world’s second largest producer, for India’s civil nuclear programme, which is under International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) safeguards.
Other deals signed Saturday included an extradition treaty and an agreement for cooperation on space research programmes of the two countries.
Additionally, upstream oil majors ONGC Mittal Energy of India and National Co KazmunaiG (KMG) of Kazakhstan signed an agreement for exploration in the Satpayev block in the Caspian Sea. The Indian firm was offered 25 percent in the block.

Manmohan Singh has undergone a bypass surgery in a Delhi hospital and will take a few weeks to recover. Mukherjee, who is officiating in his place, has taken on some of the prime minister’s protocol duties.
Kazakhstan has the world’s second largest uranium reserves and is the leading exporter for the nuclear fuel.
This is President Nazarbayev’s fourth visit to India, but it is the first time a leader of a Central Asian country is the chief guest at the annual Republic Day parade Jan 26.
Сайт ThaindianNews.com (Thailand), January 24, 2009, NAZARBAYEV TO SIGN INDO-KAZAKH CIVIL NUCLEAR AGREEMENT
Kazakhstan President, Nursultan Nazarbayev, who is on a four day visit to India, stated here today that the India-Kazakh civil nuclear agreement is of great importance for bilateral relations between the two countries.
India and Kazakhstan are expected to sign a civil nuclear agreement and a few other pacts in the presence of President Pratibha Patil at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee will hold the delegation level talks with Nazarbayev as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will remain indisposed.
Nazarbayev, who is on his fourth visit to India since Kazakhstan separated from erstwhile Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1991, will also attend the Republic day parade as the chief guest.
The pact will ensure a smooth running of India’’s atomic plants, as Kazakhstan is the third largest share of uranium production and plans to become the second largest producer of the mineral by 2010 by raising output to 15,500 tonnes.
Besides the uranium supply, the agreement will also include joint exploration of nuclear fuel and construction of more atomic plants.
